Cincinnati Masters: Zverev through to semi-finals, remains perfect against Mannarino
Alexander Zverev defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 on Friday night and will face the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the No 9 seed, and Serb Novak Djokovic, the second seed, in the next round
German Alexander Zverev, the No 16 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters by winning against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 at the Lindner Tennis Family Center on Friday night.
In doing so, Zverev becomes just the second German men’s player since 1990 to appear in the Cincinnati semi-finals on multiple occasions, after Michael Stich.
Heading into his clash against Mannarino, Zverev held a perfect 7-0 head-to-head record, with the pair’s last meeting occurring in Montpellier in 2022. In that encounter, Zverev won in straight sets, with one 6-0 set along the way.
This time, the Frenchman avoided another bagel, but the result was rarely in question as the German dominated throughout, winning the match in an hour and 12 minutes.
Zverev, ranked No 17, will face the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the No 9 seed, and Serb Novak Djokovic, the second seed, next. Ahead of his victory, the German defeated Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (6-2, 6-2), Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (7-5, 6-4) and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed (6-4, 5-7, 6-4).
Mannarino, ranked No 32, won against Richard Gasquet (6-4, 6-3), Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 12 seed (6-4, 6-4) and American wildcard Mackenzie McDonald (6-4, 3-0 ret.) in the previous rounds of the Cincy Open.
