Cincinnati Masters: Tiafoe survives Griekspoor scare, moves into second round

American Frances Tiafoe, the No 10 seed, advanced to the second round of the Cincinnati Masters after a tough encounter with Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-4 at the Linder Tennis Family Center on Sunday night.

Griekspoor outplayed Tiafoe in many aspects, striking 12 more winners and maintaining a higher first serve percentage.

However, it was Tiafoe’s ability to defend break points, and capitalise on his own chances, that made the difference in this first round match. The American saved 6/8 break points, while making 4/9 himself.

Tiafoe, ranked No 10, will face the winner of the match between American wildcard Brandon Nakashima and Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka next.
