Cincinnati Masters: Tiafoe advances to last four as Hurkacz retires
Frances Tiafoe benefited from the retirement of Hubert Hurkacz at the Cincinnati Masters on Saturday night. Tiafoe awaits either Holger Rune or Jack Draper.
American Frances Tiafoe advanced to the last four of the Western & Southern Open when Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 5 seed, retired on Saturday night at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
Tiafoe, ranked No 26, led 6-3 when Hurkacz, ranked No 7, called it quits.
“After 2-all I felt he was a little off,” Tiafoe said on the court. “He came back pretty quick [from the surgery] and to make two quarter-finals [in Montreal and Cincinnati] shows what a great player he is. I hope he’ll be right for the Open.”
The American will face the winner of the match between Jack Draper and Dane Holger Rune, the No 15 seed, next.
Tiafoe defeated Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (6-3, 7-6 (6)), Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 14 seed (6-3, 6-2) and Jiri Lehecka (6-4, 6-7 (10), 7-6 (5)) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds, Hurkacz beat Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka (3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1) and Italian Flavio Cobolli (6-3, 3-6, 6-1).
