Cincinnati Masters: Thompson books last 16 clash against world No 1 Sinner
The Atlanta runner-up defeated Argentina’s Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-4 in the second round on Wednesday
Australian Jordan Thompson advanced to the last 16 of the Cincinnati Masters by defeating Argentinian Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-4 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Wednesday.
This levels the head-to-head between the two players at 1-1.
Ahead of his victory, the Australian edged out Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 13 seed (3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4)). That was his fifth top 20 win of the year, the most for him in any season for him yet.
Baez, ranked No 20, edged out American Marcos Giron (6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (6)) earlier in the week.
Thompson, ranked No 32, will face Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, next. This will be the first meeting between the pair.
