Cincinnati Masters: Purcell reaches last 16, takes out Ruud in three sets

Australian qualifier Max Purcell edged out Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 5 seed, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to advance to the last 16 of the Cincinnati Masters at the Linder Tennis Family Center on Wednesday evening.

It is Purcell’s first win against a player ranked in the Top 10.

Purcell, ranked No 70, will play the winner of the match between American Frances Tiafoe, the No 10 seed, and Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka next.

Ahead of his victory, the Australian defeated South African Lloyd Harris (6-4, 6-4).
