Monfils beats Montreal champ Popyrin, to face Alcaraz in Cincinnati
Montreal winner Alexei Popyrin is out after just one match in Cincinnati, having lost to Gael Monfils on Wednesday. Monfils advances to a showdown with Carlos Alcaraz.
Frenchman Gael Monfils reached the second round of the Western & Southern Open by defeating Australian Alexei Popyrin 7-5, 6-3 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Monfils, ranked No 46, will play second seed Carlos Alcaraz next.
Papyri was coming off the biggest title of his career at the Montreal Masters and had just one day of rest in between tournaments.
