Medvedev advances, one win from securing top seed at US Open
Daniil Medvedev beats Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets on Wednesday at the Cincinnati Masters. Medvedev will clinch the No 1 ranking at least through the US Open if he wins again on Thursday.
Daniil Medvedev will remain No 1 in the world and secure the top seed at the upcoming US Open if he reaches at least the quarterfinals of the Western & Southern Open or if Rafael Nadal does not win the title.
Step one is halfway to completion for Medvedev, who followed a first-round bye with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Botic van de Zandschulp on Tuesday night. The Russian will advance to the quarters if he defeats either Denis Shapovalov or Tommy Paul on Thursday.
Medvedev certainly got some help from Van de Zandschulp, who double-faulted a ridiculous 11 times.
