Frenchman Adrian Mannarino reached the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters when American wildcard Mackenzie McDonald retired on Thursday evening at the Linder Tennis Family Center.
Mannarino, ranked No 32, led 6-4, 3-0 when McDonald, ranked No 43, pulled out on Thursday evening at the Linder Tennis Family Center.
The 35-year-old Frenchman will face German Alexander Zverev, the No 16 seed, next.
Adrian Mannarino defeated Richard Gasquet (6-4, 6-3) and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 12 seed (6-4, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the Cincy Open, the American won against German Yannick Hanfmann (7-5, 6-1) and Dane Holger Rune, the No 6 seed (6-4, 2-0 ret.).
