Fritz brushes aside struggling Kyrgios, into Cincy last 16
Taylor Fritz beat Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday evening. He’ll face Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 6 seed, in the next round
American Taylor Fritz, the No 11 seed, won against Australian Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the last 16 of the Cincinnati Masters at the Linder Tennis Family Center on Wednesday evening.
Completing the match in 50 minutes, it was the quickest win of the week – and it was evident that Kyrgios was having physical issues, complaining about his knee at one point.
There was scattered booing at the conclusion of the match as a dishearted Kyrgios unlaced his shoes and headed off; after returning to the tour in Stuttgart in June, he has had good runs in both singles and doubles, and had earlier expressed slight anxieties about how his body might hold up as well as his temperament.
Fritz, ranked No 13, will face Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 6 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the American beat Argentinian Sebastian Baez (6-1, 6-1).
Kyrgios, ranked No 28, defeated Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (7-5, 6-4) in the previous round of the Cincy Open.
