China Open: Zverev comes back from a set down against Davidovich Fokina to make quarter-finals
Alexander Zverev won against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday evening. He’ll face Chilean Nicolas Jarry in the next round
German Alexander Zverev, the No 8 seed, reached the last eight of the China Open by winning against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1 at the Olympic Green Tennis Center in Beijing on Saturday evening.
It was the second time in two matches that Zverev had lost an opening tiebreaker before going on to win the match, having also done so against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman (6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
While the German was pleased to have made his 10th quarter-final of the season, he wasn’t too happy about the match’s scheduling, with the clash finishing at 2:40am.
“I’m happy with the win. Obviously, it’s difficult to play until 3:00 am. I’m not sure it was the right call to keep us on this court. I think we should’ve changed courts. We should’ve gone on. There’s so many great courts on the stadium. So many opportunities where we could’ve played. I’m not sure we should’ve waited until past midnight to start the match, to be honest,” Zverev said after the match.
Zverev, ranked No 10, will play Chilean Nicolas Jarry next.
In the previous round of the Beijing tournament, Davidovich Fokina, ranked No 25, beat Chinese wildcard Yi Zhou (6-2, 6-2).
