Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, moved into the second round of the China Open by beating Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-4 at the Olympic Green Tennis Center in Beijing on Friday.
It was double-faults galore as Medvedev and Monfils showed jitters in their swings, netting eight and six second serves, respectively.
The match extended beyond 90 minutes as the Russian secured the match point after having hit only two aces and four winners.
Medvedev, ranked No 5, will play Frenchman Adrian Mannarino next.
