China Open: Khachanov beats Cerundolo to reach quarter-finals
The Russian will play the winner of the match between Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, in the next round
Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 7 seed, won against Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 (4), 7-6 (9) to reach the last eight of the China Open on Sunday.
Cerundolo had four set points in the second set but was unable to convert while Khachanov finally closed the win on his sixth matchpoint.
This was the Russian’s seventh win over Cerundolo in as many meetings, with five of those clashes coming in 2024 itself.
Khachanov, ranked No 27, will face the winner of the match between Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, next at the Olympic Green Tennis Center in Beijing.
The Russian defeated Spanish lucky loser Roberto Carballes Baena (6-4, 6-4) ahead of his win today.
Earlier in the week, Cerundolo, ranked No 31, won against qualifier Jakub Mensik (7-6 (4), 6-1).
