Tuesday play in Santiago halted as Chile declares state of emergency following blackout

Tuesday competition at the ATP 250 tournament in Santiago was suspended on Tuesday due to a massive blackout throughout Chile.

As massive power outage in Chile brought a halt to Tuesday’s schedule of play at the Movistar Chile Open in Santiago.

Chile declared a state of emergency and curfew across a large part of the country including Santiago, which is the capital. Millions were left without power in what was the worst blackout in Chile in more than a decade. President Gabriel Boric announced “a state of emergency due to a catastrophe” and stated that the curfew would last from 10:00 pm local time on Tuesday night until 6:00 am on Wednesday morning.

Officials at the ATP 250 stated, “As a tournament, we are aware of the emergency that is developing in the country and the state of constitutional exception decreed by the government that will begin to take effect at 10:00 pm. By instruction of the authorities, we suspend the match and evacuate the venue.”

Six singles matches were completed on Tuesday. Federico Coria vs Tomas Barrios Vera and Francisco Comesana vs Felipe Meligeni Alves were in progress and postponed until Wednesday.

Play is scheduled to resume at 2:00 pm.
