Chile Open: Tabilo ends Moutet’s run to reach final
The Chilean will face Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the second seed, for the title
Local favourite Alejandro Tabilo, the No 4 seed, advanced to the final of the Chile Open by edging out French qualifier Corentin Moutet 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 at Club Universidad Católica de San Carlos de Apoquindo in Santiago de Chile on Saturday.
Tabilo, ranked No 51, will play Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the second seed, next.
The Chilean won against Tomas Barrios Vera (6-2, 7-5) and Italian wildcard Luciano Darderi (6-0, 7-5) ahead of his victory.
“He is a very talented player who I knew would come up with a lot of variety,” Tabilo said after the win as quoted by the ATP Tour. “It’s always tough playing against someone like that, but (the crowd) helped me a lot today and I was just trying to keep focused, keep calm and keep battling. In the third set I just thought back to how I was broken in the first game of the second set, so I had a few more games to break back. I just tried to stay calm and wait for the opportunity.”
Tabilo will be aiming to become the third Chilean in the past four years to lift the trophy on Sunday.
In the previous rounds of the tournament, Moutet, ranked No 140, defeated Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, the No 7 seed (6-3, 5-7, 6-2), Argentinian Thiago Agustin Tirante (6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2) and Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the top seed (7-6 (5), 7-6 (3)).
