Chile Open: Darderi survives three hour-plus marathon to reach second round
The Cordoba champion will face Argentinian qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the next round
Italian wildcard Luciano Darderi edged out Argentinian lucky loser Facundo Bagnis 7-6 (4), 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5) to move into the second round of the Chile Open at Club Universidad Católica de San Carlos de Apoquindo in Santiago de Chile on Tuesday.
Darderi, ranked No 80, needed three hours and 19 minutes for the win and will now face Argentinian qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo next.
The Italian saved two match points at 4-6 in the second set tiebreak before coming back for the win.
The Italian won the title in Cordoba earlier this month and reached the second round at the Argentina Open as well. In fact, Darderi has defeated Bagnis in the Cordoba final and now leads the head-to-head series between the two at 3-1.
