Jordan Thompson advanced to the second round of the Chengdu Open by beating No 6 seed Max Purcell 6-2, 7-6 (8) at the Sichuan International Tennis Center on Thursday night.
Thompson, ranked No 56, will play Serb Dusan Lajovic next.
