Chengdu Open: Kachmazov upsets Jarry to advance to semi-finals
The Russian qualifier will face Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the top seed, or Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the No 5 seed, in the next round
Russian qualifier Alibek Kachmazov advanced to the last four of the Chengdu Open by winning against Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 3 seed, 6-3, 6-4 at the Sichuan International Tennis Center on Sunday.
Kachmazov, ranked No 252, will face the winner of the match between Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the top seed, and Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the No 5 seed, for a place in the final.
The win makes him the lowest-ranked semi-finalist in tournament’s history. It also marks the biggest win of his career and first top 50 win for the Russian.
Prior to this week, Kachmazov had won only one ATP Tour main draw match. The 22-year-old Russian defeated American Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-4, 7-6 (7)) and Japanese Taro Daniel (7-6 (1), 6-1) in the previous rounds of the tournament.
Earlier in the week, Jarry, ranked No 28, edged out Slovak Lukas Klein (7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4). This was the Chilean’s first win on the ATP Tour since May, ending a seven-match losing streak on the tour.
