Chengdu Open: Hanfmann upsets Perricard to reach quarters

The German will meet Australian Aleksandar Vukic or Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero, the No 4 seed, in the next round

Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann moved into the quarter-finals of the Chengdu Open by defeating Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, the No 7 seed, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at the Sichuan International Tennis Center on Friday.

The Frenchman hit 22 aces in the match but was unable to stop Hanfmann from reaching his 17th ATP level quarter-final.

Hanfmann, ranked No 95, will play the winner of the match between Australian Aleksandar Vukic and Spaniard Pedro Martinez, the No 4 seed, next.

In the previous round of the tournament, the German won against Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki (6-4, 7-6 (4)).

Mpetshi Perricard, ranked No 51, edged out Chinese wildcard Fajing Sun (6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4) earlier in the week.
