“It’s amazing!” – Cerundolo stuns top-seeded Zverev in Buenos Aires, reaches last four
Francisco Cerundolo won against Alexander Zverev 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Friday night and will play Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero in the next round
Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 5 seed, beat German Alexander Zverev, the top seed, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to move into the semi-finals of the Argentina Open at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club on Friday night.
It was a massive moment for the Buenos Aires native.
“To be able to beat him here in Buenos Aires, in my hometown, with my home crowd, it’s amazing – probably one of the best feelings I’ve ever had,” he said.
With his victory he becomes the1st Argentine to defeat a top 2 player since Schwartzman beat No. 2 Nadal at 2020 ATP Masters 1000 Rome and he also becomes the first Argentine to earn top 2 win on Argentinian soil since Agustin Calleri defeated Guga Kuerten in 2002 Buenos Aires.
Cerundolo, ranked No 28, will face Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero next.
The Argentinian won against Italian Luciano Darderi (6-4, 6-4) and qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo (6-2, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous round of the Buenos Aires Open, Zverev, ranked No 2, defeated Serb Dusan Lajovic (6-4, 6-4).
