Cerundolo snaps losing streak, makes second round of Rio Open

No 4 seed Francisco Cerundolo advanced to the second round of the Rio Open by winning against qualifier Francisco Comesana 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Monday evening.

It’s been a horrid start to 2024 for Cerundolo, who has won only two of eight matches so far this year, losing his last three in a row. However, in front of a South American crowd, the Argentinian was able to snap his losing streak on Monday, moving through to the second round for only the second time this year.

The win was not without its hiccups, as Cerundolo dropped the second set 6-1 thanks to Comesana winning 92 percent of first serve points. He bounced back strong in the decider, however, closing out the match 6-2.

Cerundolo, ranked No 22, will face the winner of the match between Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas and Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas next.
