Rising Fonseca books spot in Buenos Aires quarter-finals
Joao Fonseca defeated Federico Coria 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday evening. He’ll face the winner of the match between Argentinian Mariano Navone and Dane Holger Rune, the second seed, in the next round
Brazilian Joao Fonseca defeated Argentinian lucky loser Federico Coria 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the last 8 of the Argentina Open at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club on Thursday evening.
He didn’t play a perfect match, but dialed in his best tennis when it mattered most, winning five of the final six games to book a third career ATP quarter-final. With his win he becomes the youngest quarter-finalist in Buenos Aires since 2004.
“Today I was not feeling very well,” Fonseca said. “I was missing some easy balls and a little bit more nervous, but I’m very happy the way that I fought to the end, the mentality of staying positive during the match and focusing on the good things, to make a change after the first set.
“I’m happy with that and happy with the changes that I managed to implement after the first set.”
Fonseca, ranked No 99, will play the winner of the match between Argentinian Mariano Navone and Dane Holger Rune, the second seed, next. He has moved inside the top-90 of the ATP live rankings for the first time as of Thursday.
The 18-year-old Brazilian won against Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 8 seed (6-3, 6-3) ahead of his victory.
In the previous round of the Buenos Aires Open, Coria, ranked No 115, beat Frenchman Hugo Gaston (6-3, 6-2).
