Brisbane Open: Opelka beats Arnaldi to advance to last eight

The American will face the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, and Frenchman Gael Monfils in the next round

American Reilly Opelka reached the quarter-finals of the Brisbane Open by winning against Italian Matteo Arnaldi 7-6 (9), 7-6 (4) at the Queensland Tennis Centre on Thursday.

Opelka, ranked No 293, will play the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, and Frenchman Gael Monfils next. It will be the 20th ATP-level quarter-final for the big-serving American.

Ahead of his win today, Opelka defeated Argentinian qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez (7-5, 6-4).

Arnaldi, ranked No 37, beat Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 7 seed (6-3, 6-2) in the previous round of the tournament.
