Dane Holger Rune, the top seed, moved into the last eight of the Brisbane International by winning against Russian Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on Wednesday.
Just as he did in the round of 32 against Max Purcell, the 20-year-old dropped a set, forcing him to go to a decider before wrapping up the win.
Rune, ranked No 8, will play Australian qualifier James Duckworth next.
In the previous round, Shevchenko, ranked No 48, beat Frenchman Luca Van Assche (6-3, 6-2).
Rune did eventually win against Australian Purcell (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) ahead of this victory.
