Berrettini confirms injury diagnosis – ruptured ankle ligament
Berrettini’s ankle injury is not as serious as originally feared
Matteo Berrettini has confirmed that he suffered a ruptured ankle ligament at the US Open, which forced him out of his second-round match against Arthur Rinderknech.
The Italian has picked up a string of injuries in recent years, and looked to be returning to something like his best form as he headed to New York.
He enjoyed a comfortable straight-sets win in the first round against Ugo Humbert, following a good run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon, losing to Carlos Alcaraz.
However, he hurt his ankle against the Frenchman and has since had scans and tests which have confirmed that the injury is not as serious as originally feared.
“I’m extremely disappointed that I will not be able to represent Italy in Bologna [in the Davis Cup], or compete in the ATP events in Asia,” he wrote on Instagram.
He added, however, that he was beginning “intense rehab” and hoped to return to tour shortly after the Shanghai Masters, which concludes on October 15.
