Barcelona Open: Tsitsipas survives scare to beat Diaz Acosta and reach semi-finals
Stefanos Tsitsipas edged out Diaz Acosta 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8) and will play the winner of the match between Arthur Fils and Dusan Lajovic in the next round
Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 5 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open by edging out Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8) at Real Club de Tenis Barcelona.
The world No 7 survived a huge scare against a talented clay-courter, saving match point en route to an epic victory.
Tsitsipas has never won the Barcelona Open, having reached the final in 2021 and 2023. He is now is a great position to do so as he will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 16 seed, and Serb Dusan Lajovic in the last four.
Ahead of his victory, the Greek won against Austrian Sebastian Ofner (6-4, 7-5) and Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (7-5, 6-3).
Acosta, ranked No 53, beat Spanish wildcard Daniel Rincon (6-1, 6-4), Croat Borna Coric, the No 15 seed (6-2, 7-5) and Hungarian Fabian Marozsan, the No 17 seed (3-6, 6-3, 6-1) in the previous rounds of the Barcelona tournament.
