Sebastian Baez beat Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the semi-finals of the Chile Open at the Club Universidad Católica de San Carlos de Apoquindo in Santiago de Chile on Saturday night.

The No 3 seed converted five of 10 break points while prevailing in one hour and 47 minutes.

Baez is through to the Santiago final for the third time in his career, having finished runner-up in 2022 before capturing the title last year.

“(It feels) very good, because today was (a) big battle, because we have known each other [for] many years,” Baez said for Ugo Carabelli, his fellow Argentine. “He’s going a very good job, so I just say congrats to him (and his team). In some moments of the match we both had up-and-downs — more in the first and second sets. In the third I think I did better than him. Of course I’m happy to be in the final tomorrow.”

The world No 31 will face Serbia’s Laslo Djere in the championship match. Baez is looking to go back-to-back in consecutive weeks in Rio de Janeiro and Santiago — a feat he also accomplished in 2024.

He previously ousted Francisco Comesana (6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (5)) and Damir Dzumhur (6-4, 6-4) prior to Saturday’s victory.

Ugo Carabelli, ranked No 69, earned his spot in the semi-finals by knocking off Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 7 seed (5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (9)), Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3) and Federico Coria (6-4, 6-3).
