Baez fends off Navone to reach Rio Open quarter-finals
Sebastian Baez survived a tight three-setter against fellow Argentine Mariano Navone on Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro. Baez awaits either Thiago Monteiro or qualifier Chun-Hsin Tseng in the next round.
No 5 seed Sebastian Baez got the best of Mariano Navone 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Rio Open at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday night.
Both players broke serve five times over the course of two hours and eight minutes. Baez came back from a 2-0 deficit in the third set and Navone even had two break points to go up by a double-break.
The 31st-ranked Argentine will next play the winner of a match between Brazilian wild card Thiago Monteiro and qualifier Chun-Hsin Tseng. In the previous round of the Rio tournament, Baez defeated lucky loser Roman Andres Burruchaga 6-3, 7-5.
Navone, ranked No 46, beat Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round.
