ATP rankings: Djokovic close to clinching year-end No 1, top eight for Turin is set
Following the conclusion of the Paris Masters, all eight players in the 2023 race to Turin have officially clinched their spots in the year-end championship.
With only a pair of ATP 250 tournaments on the schedule prior to the Nitto ATP Finals, the field for the prestigious year-end championship is set. Here are the 2023 race standings heading into the festivities in Turin, Italy later this month:
1. Novak Djokovic
2. Carlos Alcaraz
3. Daniil Medvedev
4. Jannik Sinner
5. Andrey Rublev
6. Stefanos Tsitsipas
7. Alexander Zverev
8. Holger Rune
No 9 Hubert Hurkacz and No 10 Taylor Fritz are in line to be the two alternates.
Djokovic close to clinching year-end No 1 ranking
With 9,945 points this season, Djokovic leads Alcaraz by 1,490 points. There are 1,500 ranking points available at the Nitto ATP Finals, which would be the reward for an undefeated champion. In other words, if Alcaraz goes 3-0 in round-robin competition and then takes the title, he would add 1,500 points to his current haul and finish with 9,955 — 10 more than Djokovic’s current number. If that happens, Alcaraz would still need the Serb to go winless in the group stage. If Djokovic wins just a single match, he clinches the year-end top spot.
The 36-year-old, who added 1,000 points to his season-long haul be triumphing at the Rolex Paris Masters on Sunday, is now entering his 398th week as world No 1. He has maintained the top spot uninterrupted since the end of August.
Separation in the top four
The top four of the rankings look all but set through the end of the year. In addition to Djokovic’s massive lead of Alcaraz, the 20-year-old Spaniard is 1,255 points ahead of Medvedev. In the No 3 spot, Medvedev has an insurmountable 1,710-point advantage over Sinner.
It gets a little bit more interesting after that, as Sinner is 685 points clear of Rublev. The Russian would have to reach at least the final in Turin in order to pass Sinner for the fourth spot.
The only particularly close contest is between No 7 and No 8. Zverev has 3,585 points to Rune’s 3460, a margin of just 125.
