ATP Next Gen Finals: Fils remains unbeaten; Stricker qualifies for semis
Fils wins his third match in a row and qualifies top of the Green group
Top seed Arthur Fils, of France, remained unbeaten at the 2023 ATP Next Gen Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia after a four-set win over Swiss Dominic Stricker in the Green group on Thursday.
Fils and Stricker split the first two sets before the 19-year-old Frenchman won the next two sets to complete the 4-2, 3-4 (3-7), 4-2, 4-3 (7-5) in one hour and 44 minutes. The victory improved Fils’ record to 3-0 in round-robin play.
“I knew before the match (that I had qualified), but I just want to win every match that I’m playing,” Fils said after his win on court. “I think I put a little bit more focus out there today than the first two days because I know this opponent and he already beat me this year. It was a tough match, but I’m really happy to win and let’s see who I get in the semi-final.”
With Stricker taking a set off Fils, the Swiss qualified in second place from the Green group. Sticker, Flavio Cobolli and Luca Nardi all finished with a 1-2 record but the Swiss advanced with the best sets winning percentage.
This is the second year in a row that Stricker is through to the semi-finals of this tournament.
In the Red group, Luca Van Assche (1-1) takes on Alex Michelsen (0-2) and Hamad Medjedovic (2-0) faces Abdullah Shelbyah (1-1) later on Thursday.
