ATP Finals 2023: Race heats up heading into Asian swing as Sinner, Rune look to boost qualification chances
With 4000 points on the line over the next six weeks, and only three players qualified for the 2023 ATP Finals, the race heats up heading into this year’s Asian swing
With only seven weeks until the 2023 ATP Finals begin, the race to Turin is heating up. Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev have qualified already, but with five spots up for grabs, and plenty of points on the line over the Asian swing and beyond, who will join them?
Jannik Sinner is well positioned to qualify in the main draw of the 2023 ATP Finals for the first time, having served as an alternate at the event in 2021, while Alexander Zverev is also making a late surge for qualification.
Updated points in the 2023 ATP Finals race
With 5025 points required to qualify, here’s how the race to Turin is currently looking:
- Novak Djokovic (8945 points, qualified)
- Carlos Alcaraz (8175 points, qualified)
- Daniil Medvedev (6590 points, qualified)
- Jannik Sinner (4365 points)
- Andrey Rublev (3640 points)
- Stefanos Tsitsipas (3570 points)
- Alexander Zverev (3270 points)
- Holger Rune (3055 points)
- Taylor Fritz (3010 points)
- Casper Ruud (2625 points)
- Alex de Minaur (2505 points)
- Tommy Paul (2435 points)
Frances Tiafoe, Karen Khachanov and Cameron Norrie are next in line, sitting just outside the top 12 in the race.
Qualification scenarios ahead of the 2023 ATP Finals
Over the next six weeks, there are two Masters 1000 tournaments, four ATP 500 events (two that occur simultaneously), as well as five ATP 250 events (with four happening concurrently in separate weeks, and one at the same time as the Beijing 500).
This means that a total of 4000 points are on offer between now and the 2023 ATP Finals, leaving plenty of wiggle room for players to make late pushes for qualification.
With just 630 points separating fifth-placed Andrey Rublev and ninth-placed Taylor Fritz, the next few weeks will be crucial. Rublev, Fritz and Ruud all chose to play the Laver Cup recently, which offers no ranking points, while Alexander Zverev contested the ATP 250 event in Chengdu and won the title, boosting his chances.
This time last year, Holger Rune played supremely across the indoor hard-court swing, something he’ll be hoping to do again to make his debut in the main draw of the ATP Finals, after having served as an alternate last year off the back of his 2022 Rolex Paris Masters win.
A win in Beijing this week would get Sinner within touching distance of qualification, but the Italian is not the only player looking to gain some valuable points this week. Eight of the world’s top 10 will be present at the ATP 500 event in Beijing, with only Djokovic and Fritz sitting the tournament out.
