ATP Brisbane: Opelka stuns Djokovic to reach semi-finals
The American will play Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the next round
American Reilly Opelka advanced to the last four of the Brisbane Open by winning against Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, 7-6 (6), 6-3 at the Queensland Tennis Centre on Friday.
It is the first top 10 win for the American since 2021. Opelka, ranked No 293 in the world after struggling with injuries for the past couple of seasons, will face Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard next.
Ahead of his win today, the American beat Argentinian qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez (7-5, 6-4) and Italian Matteo Arnaldi (7-6 (9), 7-6 (4)).
Djokovic, ranked No 7, won against Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata (6-3, 6-3) and Frenchman Gael Monfils (6-3, 6-3) earlier in the week.
