ATP Brisbane: Dimitrov through to semi-finals as Thompson retires
The defending champion will play Jiri Lehecka for a place in the final
Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the second seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Brisbane International when Australian Jordan Thompson, the No 8 seed, retired at the Queensland Tennis Centre on Friday.
Dimitrov, ranked No 10, was leading 6-1, 2-1 when Thompson, ranked No 26, pulled out of the encounter. The Australian twice had medical treatment on his right calf muscle before pulling out of the match.
The 33-year-old Bulgarian, who won the tournament last year, will play Czech Jiri Lehecka next. It will be his sixth appearance in the Brisbane semi-finals.
“I was just trying to focus on my game. Honestly its’ very, very unfortunate for him. I hope he’s ready for the Aussie Open,” the former world No 3 said. “Not much to say, I just came out here to compete, to go through my motions on the court and yeah, I think from the beginning I was in very good control of the match.
Dimitrov defeated German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann (7-6 (5), 6-3) and Australian wildcard Aleksandar Vukic (6-2, 7-6 (5)) prior to his win today.
Earlier in the week, Thompson edged out Italian Matteo Berrettini (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) and American Alex Michelsen (7-5, 6-3).
