The Czech will face Portuguese Nuno Borges, the No 7 seed, in the last eight
Jakub Mensik upset American Ben Shelton, the top seed, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the last eight of the ASB Classic in Auckland on Wednesday.
Mensik, ranked No 49, will play Portuguese Nuno Borges, the No 7 seed, next at the ASB Tennis Arena. It will be the Czech’s seventh ATP-level quarter-final and his second of the new season. The win also levels the head-to-head between the two players at 1-1.
Mensik also becomes the youngest man to reach the Auckland quarter-finals since 17-year-old Rafae; Nadal reached the final in 2004.
