ATP Auckland: Marozsan beats Monfils in third set tiebreak
Marozsan will face top seed Ben Shelton in the second round of the tournament
Hungarian Fabian Marozsan overcame the loss of the second set to defeat French veteran Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4) and reach the second round of the Auckland Open at the ASB Tennis Arena on Monday.
Monfils displayed some of his trademark brand of electric tennis as he saved two matchpoints in the second set tiebreaker and won it 8-6 to push the match into a decider.
The Frenchman then went up a break to lead 5-3 in the third set and served for the match before Marozsan fought back to force another tiebreaker 7-4 which he won to close out the victory in two hours and 35 minutes.
The Hungarian, ranked No 65 in the world and the first from his country to win a main draw match in Auckland since 1973, will face top seed Ben Shelton next.
