Atlanta Open: Mayot beats Coric to reach second round
Harold Mayot defeated Borna Coric 7-6 (9), 6-3 on Tuesday evening. He’ll face No 4 seed Jordan Thompson in the next round
Lucky loser Harold Mayot advanced to the second round of the Atlanta Open by defeating Croat Borna Coric 7-6 (9), 6-3 at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Tuesday evening.
The first set went down to the wire with Mayot winning it in one hour and 20 minutes before a more comfortable win in the second set for the Frenchman, who came into the main draw after Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis pulled out of the tournament due to injuries.
The loss continues a poor run of form for Coric, who has now won only two matches in his previous six events on the circuit.
Mayot, from France and ranked No 122 in the world, will face No 4 seed Jordan Thompson next.
Several first round matches were pushed to Wednesday as rain interrupted play and forced the cancellation of the night session.
