Atlanta Open: Kokkinakis beats Monfils to reach last 16
The Australian will play second seed and countryman Alex De Minaur in the next round
Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis edged out French wildcard Gael Monfils 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to move into the last 16 of the Atlanta Open on Monday night.
The Australian came back from 0-4 down in the final set tiebreak to beat the French veteran, who was playing his first match since pulling out of Roland-Garros due to a wrist injury.
Kokkinakis, ranked No 86, won the doubles event last year with Nick Kyrgios but this was his first singles win in Atlanta. He will play second seed and fellow Australian Alex De Minaur next.
