Atlanta Open: Davidovich Fokina beats Opelka to reach last eight

Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 5 seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Atlanta Open by defeating American Reilly Opelka 7-5, 7-5 at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Thursday.

Davidovich Fokina, ranked No 43, will face Australian Jordan Thompson, the No 4 seed, next.

In the previous round of the tournament, the Spaniard won against Frenchman Arthur Cazaux (6-2, 7-6 (4)).

Opelka, ranked No 430, beat Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-3, 7-6 (5)) earlier in the week.
