Atlanta Open: Qualifier Bellucci upsets second seed Mannarino to make first ATP-level QF
The Italian left-hander will play Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in the next round
Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci upset Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the second seed, in three sets to move into the quarter-finals of the Atlanta Open on Wednesday.
Bellucci advanced to his first ATP Tour-level quarter-final with a 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 win over Mannarino at the Atlanta Athletic Club. This was also his first career top 50 win.
The Italian left-hander, ranked No 146, will face Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech next.
Ahead of his win today, Bellucci benefited from the retirement of Australian Aleksandar Vukic (1-6, 6-4, 3-1) in the first round.
For Mannarino, the loss continued a run of early losses on the tour in 2024. The Frenchman is now 8-19 on the main ATP Tour for this year and was his sixth consecutive loss on the tour.
Rain continued to hamper the tournament with several second round matches now being pushed over to Thursday.
