Astana Open: Impressive Thiem edges past Giron to make the quarter-finals

Austrian Dominic Thiem reached the last 8 of the Astana Open by edging out American Marcos Giron 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (2) at the Daulet National Tennis Center.

Thiem, ranked No 81, will face the winner of the match between Austrian Sebastian Ofner and Kazakh Alexander Bublik, the No 3 seed, next.

The Austrian won against Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas (6-3, 7-6 (8)) in the previous round of the Nur-Sultan tournament.

In the previous round of the Nur-Sultan tournament, Giron, ranked No 82, edged out Swiss Stan Wawrinka, the No 8 seed (6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6)).
