Astana Open: Wildcard Medjedovic upsets Lehecka to reach the semi-finals
Hamad Medjedovic defeated Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-4 and will play the winner of the match between Tallon Griekspoor and Sebastian Korda in the next round
Serb wildcard Hamad Medjedovic won against No 4 seed Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-4 to reach the last four of the Astana Open at the Daulet National Tennis Center.
The rising Czech talent – one of the brightest young prospects in the game – was on an impressive run in Astana, and was the favourite to reach the final as he faced an unseeded wildcard in the last four.
Medjedovic put in a highly accomplished performance, however, unsettling his Czech opponent and ultimately deserving a win that is the biggest of his career to date.
Medjedovic, ranked No 120, will face the winner of the match between Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, the top seed, and American Sebastian Korda, the No 5 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the 20-year-old Serb benefited from the abandonment of No 7 seed Laslo Djere (6-3, 2-1) and defeated Russian wildcard Alexander Shevchenko (6-4, 6-4).
Lehecka, ranked No 29, beat Belarusian qualifier Egor Gerasimov (6-2, 7-6 (3)) in the previous round of the Nur-Sultan tournament.
