Wawrinka goes down to Mannarino in Astana, sixth early exit in seven tournaments

Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka was knocked out of the ATP Astana Open on Monday by Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.
The left-handed Mannarino overcame a slow start to oust for the former world No 3 Wawrinka 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 and advance to the second round at the Daulet National Tennis Center in Nur-Sultan.
Wawrinka had reached the semi-finals in Metz last week
Wawrinka, aged 37, was in good form coming into this week. The Swiss had qualified had reached the semi-finals in Metz last September, which included an upset win over world No 4 Daniil Medvedev.
After making his first ATP semi-final in two years, Wawrinka is now back inside the top 200 in the world rankings at No 191.
With today’s loss, Wawrinka has now lost his opening match in six of his last seven events, with Metz being the exception.
Mannarino, ranked No 51, could get a shot against world No 1 and reigning US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in the second round. The 19-year-old Spaniard plays Belgian lucky loser David Goffin in the first round after Holger Rune pulled out from the draw.
