Two weeks, two titles for Djokovic – champion at Astana Open
Novak Djokovic won the trophy on Sunday against Stefanos Tsitsipas
Serb Novak Djokovic, the No 4 seed, lifted the Astana Open trophy by defeating Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 3 seed, 6-3, 6-4 at the Daulet National Tennis Center in Nur-Sultan on Sunday.
It is Djokovic’s 90th career tour-level title, and his fourth of the year, following Tel Aviv last week, and Rome and Wimbledon earlier in the summer.
He now leads his head-to-head against Tsitsipas 8-2.
Djokovic: “I’m grateful and blessed”
“I’m just very grateful and blessed to be able to play this well at this stage of my life,” Djokovic said according to the ATP website. “You know, 35 is not 25. But I think the experience, probably, in these kinds of matches and big occasions helps as well to approach mentally in the right way.”
In the previous rounds of Nur-Sultan, Djokovic, ranked No 7, beat Chilean Cristian Garin (6-1, 6-1), Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (6-3, 6-1), Russian Karen Khachanov (6-4, 6-3) and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the second seed (4-6, 7-6 (6) ret.).
Tsitsipas, ranked No 6, beat Kazakh wildcard Mikhail Kukushkin (6-3, 6-4), Italian qualifier Luca Nardi (7-6 (2), 7-6 (3)), Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 7 seed (7-6 (8), 6-3) and Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 5 seed (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
