Auger-Aliassime upset by Bautista Agut in Astana Open first round

Eighth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was upset in the first round of the ATP 500 Astana Open on Monday as the Canadian went down to Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets.

Seeded No 8 this week, the 13th ranked Auger-Aliassime was beaten 6-4, 7-6 (6) by Bautista Agut at the Daulet National Tennis Center in Nur-Sultan.

The Canadian led 3-1 in the second set but Bautista Agut fought back to take the set to a tiebreaker and complete the straight sets win in one hour and 54 minutes.

Auger-Aliassime had been in good form in recent weeks, beating new world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the Davis Cup and Novak Djokovic at the Laver Cup.

This was Bautista Agut’s first win over the 22-year-old Canadian in four career meetings, all of them having come on hardcourts.

The Spaniard won 77 percent of the points on his first serve and 71 percent points on his second serve. On the other hand, Auger-Aliassime won 81 percent of his first serve points but was able to win only 44 percent points on his second serve.

Bautista Agut, ranked No 21, will face the winner of the match between Russian lucky loser Pavel Kotov and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina next.
