Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 3 seed, advanced to the last four of the Argentina Open when Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 6 seed, retired at Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club on Friday night.
Jarry, ranked No 21, led 4-6, 7-5 when Etcheverry, ranked No 27, pulled out on Friday night at Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.
The Chilean will play Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, Nicolas Jarry edged out Swiss Stan Wawrinka (6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-6 (5)).
The Argentinian won against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (6-4, 6-1) and Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan (6-3, 6-0) earlier in the tournament.
