Argentina Open: Jarry defeats Wawrinka for 100th career win
Nicolas Jarry edged out Stan Wawrinka 6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-6 (5) on Wednesday night. He’ll play Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 6 seed, in the next round
Nicolas Jarry rallied from a set down to claim his first win at the Argentina Open, spoiling Swiss Stan Wawrinka’s return to the Argentinian clay, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-6 (5) at Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club on Wednesday night.
“It was a very tough match,” Jarry said of his victory. “I’m very happy for the way that I stayed and competed, how I stayed focused – it means a lot and I’m very happy for this.”
It was a close call for Wawrinka, who led by a break in the final set and served for the win at 5-4, but was broken at love.
Wawrinka saved a match point while serving at 5-6 in set three, and then saved another two in the tiebreak, but Jarry clocked a forehand winner on his fourth match point to lock up his victory in two hours and 50 minutes.
The victory marks Jarry’s 100th career win. He is one of eight Chilean men to have reached that milestone, and the second active player to do so.
Jarry, ranked No 21, will play Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 6 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Buenos Aires Open, Wawrinka, ranked No 60, won against Argentinian Pedro Cachin (6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-2).
