Wildcard Facundo Diaz Acosta defeated Federico Coria 6-2, 6-3 to move into the final of the Argentina Open at Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday evening. It was a special moment for the 23-year-old, who was playing his maiden ATP semi-final and is now projected to rise to a career-high ranking of 69 in the world.
Diaz Acosta, ranked No 87 this week, will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, and Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 3 seed, next.
The Buenos Aires native, a former junior world No 6, started the 2024 season with two ATP wins to his name. He has already won six this year, including four to reach the final in Buenos Aires.
“Unbelievable,” Diaz Acosta said. “I’m so happy to win here. A lot of people are watching the match – family, friends – I’m very happy and very emotional.”
