American teens Michelsen and Tien enter Winston-Salem Open quarter-finals

Michelsen will take on Chris Eubanks in the quarter-finals while Tien will face Pablo Carreno Busta

Alex Michelsen and Learner Tien, from the United States, booked their berths in the quarter-finals of the 2024 ATP Winston-Salem Open on Wednesday.

Michelsen, aged 19, downed Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 6-1, 6-2 on the back of four break point conversions at Wake Forest University.

He will next take on fellow American Chris Eubanks, who defeated 17th seed Roman Safiullin 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(8) in the third round. Eubanks leads Michelsen 1-0 in the head-to-head.

In another third round battle on Wednesday, 18-year-old Learner Tien overcame Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last eight.

Tien notably began his debut ATP Tour-level campaign in the qualifying rounds and is now set to lock horns with Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta for a place in the semi-finals.

It will be the American’s first meeting with the Spaniard, who bettered Australia’s Aleksander Vukic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in another third-round match.

Tien has been on a tear in recent months, winning 35 of his last 37 matches across the ATP Tour, ATP Challenger and ITF Futures levels, including a 28-match winning streak.

  • Rinky Hijikata (16) beats Borna Coric 3-6, 6-3, 7-5
  • Lorenzo Sonego beats Juncheng Shang (walkover)
