Almaty Open: Cerundolo beats wildcard Engel to move into quarter-finals
The Argentine will face the winner of the match between Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev and Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko in the next round
Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 4 seed, won against German wildcard Justin Engel 6-4, 7-6 (3) to reach the last eight of the Almaty Open at Almaty Arena on Wednesday.
This was the Argentine’s 30th win of the season on the ATP Tour and he is now through to his 21st ATP Tour-level quarter-final (10-10 record in previous QFs).
Cerundolo, ranked No 31, will play the winner of the match between Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev and Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko next.
In the previous round of the tournament, Engel, ranked No 458, defeated Chak Lam Coleman Wong (7-5, 6-4) to become the first player born in 2007 or later to win an ATP Tour main draw match.
