Alert: Baez defeats Muller for Rio de Janeiro title

Sebastian Baez successfully defended his 2024 Rio Open title by beating Alexandre Muller in straight sets on Sunday. Baez will also be the defending champion next week in Santiago.

Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 5 seed, beat Frenchman Alexandre Muller 6-2, 6-3 to win the Rio Open tournament at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday evening.

Baez rolled to a second consecutive title in Rio after one hour and 26 minutes.


Ahead of Sunday’s victory, the world No 31 defeated lucky loser Roman Andres Burruchaga (6-3, 7-5), Mariano Navone (6-4, 1-6, 6-3), qualifier Chun-Hsin Tseng (6-4, 6-1) and lucky loser Camilo Ugo Carabelli (3-6, 6-1, 6-1).

Muller’s impressive run featured wins over Brazilian Joao Fonseca (6-1, 7-6 (4)), Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 8 seed (7-5, 7-6 (5)), Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 4 seed (7-5, 6-1) and Argentinian Francisco Comesana (7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-3).

Baez now goes to Santiago, where he is also the defending champion. Muller will play on the hard courts of Acapulco next week.
