Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka edged out Dane Holger Rune, the No 5 seed, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to move into the second round of the Adelaide International 1 at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre on Monday.
Nishioka, ranked No 36, will play American Mackenzie McDonald next.
